What is Cosmetic Surgery?
Cosmetic Surgery is a whole industry which is practiced all around the world. It offers a range of treatments and procedures designed either to change your body cosmetically / aesthetically or for medical / reconstructive purposes. There are a wide range of procedures to choose from and many people can decide to undergo them for a range of reasons. In the United Kingdom, the body that looks over cosmetic surgery procedures is the British Association for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) whilst its American counterpart is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
As there are so many procedures it would be impossible to cover them all here or give a general overview of what they involve, instead some will be mentioned here. There are of course many breast–related procedures such as breast enlargement surgery which have become synonymous with the term, with the mentioned procedure involving the use of implants to increase the size of the breasts, but there are also others.
Breast Uplift surgery (also known as Mastopexy), for example, is a breast related procedure that does not involve increasing their size (though this can be done in conjunction). It involves lifting the patient’s breasts to a restore a more youthful appearance. Recent studies have even shown that patient satisfaction is high with the treatment.
A Tummy Tuck involves removing excess fat from the abdominal area (giving it the name abdominoplasty), making a large incision and removing the excess fat along with skin and tightening the muscles.
An otoplasty is the procedure undertaken when you need to correct your ears. It involves reshaping them so that they no longer stick out or protrude. Surgery is undertaken to remove skin and cartilage in the area and then the stitches are hidden within the natural crease of the ear, meaning minimal scarring. This is a procedure often undertaken by younger people, with a lot of the patients being between the ages of four and fourteen.
There are also a whole wealth of others, including Blepharoplasty, where excess fat, skin and atrophied muscle is removed from the eyelids to get rid of that ‘tired’ look. There are also treatments like labial reduction, male breast reduction and breast enhancement surgeries.
For more information on any of these procedures or others you can visit some of our partner Cosmetic Surgery Consultants so that you can be sure as to whether any of these treatments are right for you. |
